Episode 28 - Shal Ngo — Art vs. Commerce Podcast

Shal Ngo: Director

I sat down with Shal Ngo, a commercial director who just started doing features. We talked about both worlds, and his transition into feature films. Here are some things that I learned!

Here’s the full video :

Conflict is Good on Set

The main caveat here is that it’s good when it’s best idea wins.

It’s hard for a Director to give up that creative control.

Shal talked about it from his collaboration with his DP. His strategy was to separate his ego from the whole process. Once the project is complete it’s no longer his and exists outside of him. It kind of feels like a bird leaving the nest.

How to get into feature filmmaking

This is a question lots of commercial filmmakers face. It’s not an easy transition. After all, there are fewer feature films than there are commercials. It’s far more competitive and the spots are few. Especially for Directors.

Shal broke it down into 4 points.

  1. Just start
  2. Speaking about it, is not doing it.
  3. Sometimes start with a cool, accessible  location, not a concept.
  4. It’s gonna suck at first
